The fore peak tank is a compartment located at the very front (bow) of a ship, ahead of the collision bulkhead. It is primarily used as a ballast tank to help maintain the vessel's trim and stability.
By adjusting the water level in the fore peak tank, ship operators can control the ship’s draft and balance—especially important during loading, unloading, or varying sea conditions.
In addition to its ballast function, the fore peak tank also serves as a safety feature. Positioned forward of the main cargo or machinery spaces, it acts as a buffer zone that can absorb impact in case of a collision, helping to protect the rest of the ship.
Due to its location, the fore peak tank is subject to significant structural stresses from wave slamming and hull flexing. As such, it is built with reinforced plating and robust framing to withstand these forces over the vessel's lifetime.
