What Is Check-in Baggage?
Check-in baggage (also called checked luggage) refers to the suitcases or bags you hand over to the airline at the check-in counter. These are stored in the aircraft’s cargo hold during the flight and retrieved at your destination’s baggage claim area.
Standard Allowances
Most airlines allow:
- Weight: 20–23 kg (44–50 lbs) per bag
- Dimensions: Total linear dimensions (length + width + height) usually not exceeding 158 cm (62 inches)
- Number of bags: Typically 1–2 bags included in economy class; varies by airline and ticket type
Note: Always verify with your specific airline before traveling, as policies differ.
Prohibited Items
You cannot pack the following in check-in baggage:
- Lithium batteries (unless installed in devices)
- Flammable liquids or solids
- Explosives or hazardous materials
- Firearms (without proper declaration and permits)
- Valuables like cash, jewelry, or electronics (recommended in carry-on only)
Tips for Smooth Check-in
- Label your bag with your name, phone number, and destination address.
- Use a sturdy, lockable suitcase (TSA-approved locks if flying to/from the U.S.).
- Weigh your bag at home to avoid excess fees.
- Arrive at the airport early—especially during peak travel times.
- Keep a photo of your luggage in case it gets lost.
