The Oriental Pearl Tower

Shanghai’s most iconic symbol soaring above the Pudong skyline

Overview

The Oriental Pearl Tower (东方明珠塔) is a TV tower located in Lujiazui, Pudong, Shanghai. Standing at 468 meters (1,535 ft), it was the tallest structure in China from its completion in 1994 until 2007. Designed by architect Jiang Huan Cheng, the tower blends futuristic design with traditional Chinese cultural elements.

Architectural Highlights

The tower features 11 spheres of varying sizes, symbolizing pearls on a jade plate—a reference to the ancient poem “Pearls falling onto a jade plate.” Its unique lattice structure and observation decks offer panoramic views of Shanghai and the Huangpu River.
